What this worksheet helps you decide
Compare listed luggage volumes with a chosen usable boot-space allowance. It provides a transparent working copy of one defined question, not a complete journey plan. The relevant inputs and the scope of the calculation stay visible beside the result.
The most useful result is not always the most favorable number. It may be a shortfall that tells you to revisit an allowance, a comparison that exposes a hidden fee, or a reminder that your source information needs checking.
How to use it
- Define one scenario. Use information you have checked for your own trip. Replace every example field that differs from your plan.
- Check units and reference dates. Keep amounts in the units shown. Clock values share one reference clock; a currency label does not convert money.
- Calculate and read the components. Compare the result with the method below. If a source value is uncertain, calculate a second scenario rather than treating one answer as certain.
- Keep a copy deliberately. Download or print only after reviewing the result. Changing an input marks the old result stale; calculate again before exporting.
Method and calculation rules
Planning budget equals usable volume minus your reserved space. Add the listed luggage volumes and subtract them from the budget. The margin shows unused budget or an overage. It is an arithmetic volume comparison, not a three-dimensional fit simulation.
The method describes what is counted and what is not. A displayed quantity can be rounded for readability; rounding does not make an input more accurate. Do not substitute a result for facts this worksheet does not retrieve.
A worked example
420 L usable space minus a 60 L reserve leaves 360 L. Items totaling 220 L leave a 140 L planning margin.
Important limits
Positive spare volume does not prove physical fit, visibility, secure loading or legal vehicle weight. Bag shapes and access needs matter. Check the actual vehicle and load safely.
Use this worksheet while stationary. It cannot monitor your journey, notify another traveler or provide emergency help. If a result appears wrong, stop relying on it and send a non-sensitive reproducible example through the Contact page.
Questions about this tool
Can I enter a manufacturer’s boot figure?
You can, but the actual usable space may be smaller. Seats, shelves, shapes and access requirements affect what fits.
Does this check payload weight?
No. Volume and mass are different. Check the vehicle’s own load and securing requirements separately.
